How to Spot and Avoid Computer Viruses and Scams
Posted in :
Most viruses and scams do not break into your computer on their own. They rely on someone clicking a link, opening an attachment or installing something that looks genuine. The good news is that a few simple habits make you much harder to catch out.
Be wary of unexpected emails
Scam emails often pretend to be from banks, delivery companies or well-known brands. Watch out for urgent language, spelling mistakes and links that do not match the company website. If in doubt, go to the website directly rather than clicking the link.
Never let a stranger take control of your computer
Genuine companies will not phone you out of the blue to say your computer has a virus. If someone asks you to install software so they can fix it remotely, hang up.
Keep everything up to date
Updates for Windows, your web browser and other programs often fix security holes. Turning on automatic updates is one of the easiest ways to stay protected.
Use security software
Make sure you have reputable security software running and that it is switched on. Windows includes built-in protection that works well for most people when kept up to date.
Signs something is wrong
- Pop-ups that will not go away
- Your browser home page has changed on its own
- New programs you do not remember installing
- Your computer is suddenly much slower
If you spot any of these, avoid entering passwords or bank details until the computer has been checked.
